Norwegian Sky – Ship Tour

We had the privilege of touring the Norwegian Sky before it traveled to Cuba.

Norwegian Sky was built in 1999 and served as Sky until 2004 when it was overhauled and renamed Pride of Aloha. For four years she sailed the Hawaiian islands as a U.S.-flagged and crewed ship. When she reverted to her original name and was re-flagged to the Bahamas Norwegian wisely kept her beautiful Hawaiian themed decorations. A 2013 refurbishment and good maintenance has kept Sky looking good.

We toured the cabins first and then headed to a sit down lunch on deck 5 in the Palace Main Dining Room. Many of the cabins are small and tight including small balcony rooms. As you look at higher end rooms, the size of the cabins improves greatly. The Penthouse and Owner Suites are very nice.  Some of them have a hot tub on the sun deck or balcony area.

The main dining room is called the Palace and the food was very good.  The Buffet is on Deck 11.  Norwegian is known for its Free Style dining, which means no fixed dining times or pre-assigned seating.  Free style dining is available in 5 complementary venues and 5 specialty restaurants.

The Sky has many classic ocean liner or cruise ship touches such as a Game Room, Library and nice meeting room space. The Photo area had clear cubes with black / white pictures in the middle.  They start at $99 – $300.  These are made in Miami and ship for $20.(see pictures here) An interesting fact is the Fish on the carpet always swim forward.

Norwegian Cruise Line has an open bar included on cruises aboard Sky. One of the specials Norwegian Cruise Line has been offering is the Free at Sea Program.  Selections depend on the cabin type and you can get 1-5 of these amenities.  Some of the amenities offered include: Beverage packages (liquor, beer and wine); a $50 per port Excursion credit; Specialty Dining or Wifi minutes.  The one thing to remember if you select certain of these specific amenities is you are required to pay the 18% gratuities.
